I’ve been using a service called Jott for over a year and I’m addicted. Jott allows you to use your mobile phone much like a tape recorder, but it does some other very cool things.
Once you create an account, you can call a number and rattle off all manner of things and automatically your voice messages are transcribed and delivered to your email inbox.
So, you’re sitting in the back of a cab and you get a great idea, boom, send it via your phone. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had an idea for a blog post when I’m out and about, and jott is a great way to capture it in the moment.
Jott also allows you to create groups. If you have a list of people you often need to communicate with, you can set the group up and then make one call to your account and everyone on the list gets a text message or email of whatever you speak into your phone. I use this with clients to send a recap of a meeting.
Jott also interacts with other services allowing you to a whole bunch of useful things just by making a phone call. You can set-up and post to Twitter by leaving a voice mail. You can add events to Google Calendar or 30 boxes calendars while you drive down the highway. You can create BackPack, Vitalist and Remember the Milk to-do lists. You can jott a question to Mosio and get an answer. And of course you can get Jott applications for iPhone, Blackberry or iGoogle Gadget.
As more of these services are added this tool just gets better. A couple thoughts — this is for short messages, don’t try to create a 300 word blog post. It doesn’t always get it right; speak slowly and enunciate like you’re talking to your grandpa from the old country. It also automatically creates a link to the audio file, though, so people can hear the message in your voice too.
