[Oct. 15, 2008 -- Moderator's Comment: The video below is in no way an endorsement of Dell or its products. Our goal is to encourage discussion between digital nomads to share their best thinking on mobility.]
One feature of Digital Nomads will be our Nomad Stories, which will give you some insights into how technology has enabled others to work or play from anywhere they wish. We’ll ask them about the concept of the digital nomad and what it means to them. We’ll ask about best practices and lessons they’ve learned during their times of travel.
The profiles will feature people like John Battelle, founder of Wired Magazine and The Industry Standard, and author of The Search: How Google and Its Rivals Rewrote the Rules of Business and Transformed Our Culture; Guy Kawasaki, former Apple Fellow and now a Silicon Valley Venture Capitalist; and Mario Batali, Italian America Chef, restaurateur, TV host and writer, as well as many others.
In our first video, we talk to Graham Hill, vice president of Interactive Media for Planet Green, a Discovery Communications channel, and the man behind Treehugger.com. Graham launched Treehugger back in 2004, and since those early days, it has grown to become one of the most visited blog in existence – currently ranked No. 19 out of the 112 million blogs tracked by Technorati. In this video Graham talks about how from day one, Treehugger did not have a centralized office – everyone worked where ever they lived so he has never met face-to-face with many of his colleagues, even though they are all very close.
Of the concept of digital nomads, Graham gives his view of who they are and why they are nomadic. He says, “I think digital nomads are just people who take advantage of digital technology in order to continue to do their work but in a location that might be better for financial reasons, or temperature reasons or maybe they’re just spending time with families or friends.” Well said, Graham. We agree.
Do you know of a digital nomad that we should profile? Do you have other questions you’d want to ask someone whose work is not defined by their office? Let us know.

Kind of ironic…I have been writing about this subject and niche for one and one half years, but did not want to pay $3500 for the domain name.

Hey, thanks for stopping by. Are you the individual behind http://www.digitalnomad.org? Regardless, you are welcome here.
Thanks,

This is a pretty incredible story of a startup–It’s awesome that he could live in Barcelona and have a virtual office and start this incredible company.
Thanks for putting it up.
Tom: Great… glad to hear you enjoyed it. Like Bruce mentioned, Nomad Stories will be a regular feature on this site.
Thanks for checking it out.

I’m based in LA. My co-founder in NY. We’re launching a B2B startup focused on China called The China Business Network. My office is wherever my Macbook is — which in the next few months will include LA, SF, DC, NY, Honolulu, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou. *whew* Great site! I feel right at home.

Bruce and Lowell,
Cool site. And thanks for posting on Graham, TreeHugger.com and PlanetGreen.com. I’m one of the many digital nomads working with Graham that he hasn’t met.
It’s a unique experience, but great to be able to be flexible and work from wherever is convenient. It makes traveling and visiting family easier, which I love.
Looking forward to hearing the stories of other nomadic workers.

I started out digital but have moved to include the tactile. I’m based in London (until next Tuesday), via San Francisco, Singapore, Sydney, Amsterdam, New York, Macau. Next long stopover? GuangZhou. As “dry” of a topic as it might be, I’d love to hear more about how everyone deals with taxation. I’m tax liable in 3 countries and it’s a bit of a nightmare. Recommendations would be highly appreciated!

Nice to hear your success story, I am working on my business idea and it’s a boost to hear that you’ve made it . I hope to make it as well
