Face it — digital nomads don’t carry books. They have Kindles or read everything on their iPhone screens and when it comes to travel guides, well, the opinions of the natives are always better anyway.

That’s why GoPlanIt.com is so cool. It’s an Internet-based social travel guide that lets you create a custom itinerary for an one of eight cities in the U.S. New York, Boston, Seattle, and San Fran are included, naturally, to ensure geeks will be able to get around these tech meccas.

You select a city, create an account, and then tell the site what you want to see. It builds a specialized itinerary for you complete with customized restaurant recommendations and maps. You can book flights, buy attraction tickets, and even grab a table at a hot restaurant. The “Plan It” button gives you an instant itinerary, bringing up well-known tourist destinations along with a few surprises.

Because you can add your plans to your online calendar or simply print them out, you’re left with loads of space for chargers, iPods, and other gadgetry — space that would normally be taken up by a fat guidebook.

    Hi John,

Thanks for the great article! We couldn’t agree with you more. We believe that an internet-based social travel planning tool can help save you time when deciding on things to do and see. Right now we only offer our “Planit” button for eight destinations in the US, but we will be expanding it out to other popular destinations worldwide.
