Digging in my bookmarks of handy travel-related sites, here is a cornucopia of useful ones and another that’s not so useful, just a fun hobby to pass the time on a long flight…

  • Flyer talk - forums with professional travelers — these folks seem to live for gaming the airline points systems.
  • FlightAware - a free flight tracker that is currently tracking 3,652 airborne aircraft with 73,205,867 total flights in their database. FlightAware has tracked 49,082 arrivals in the last 24 hours.
  • ITA’s fare shopping guide -  I haven’t used this one, but it’s said to be a good way to search for layovers. A good tool to use before booking your other flights. You can log in as a guest.
  • SeatExpert - 60 airlines, 378 seat maps, 210 seat maps with comments, 266 photos — all to help you figure out which seat will be best.
  • SeatGuru - another seat helper, find the best seat for your flight: maps, comments about leg room, in-seat power locations, bathroom locations, etc.
  • One of my favorite authors Doc Searls just posted up a “Flight hackers guide” and I added some of the links / tips from there, too.
  • Ok, last up - radiation testing. On occasion when I am traveling with people I know, I’ll whip out the ole’ USB radiation detector and see how many cosmic rays there are to be had. In the past the detector picked up 80, 120 and 240 Muon Count Rate (cpm). Even if I’m flying alone, I’ll ask the other passengers in my row if they’re ok with me looking for radiation. So far everyone was interested — it seems like the polite thing to do, and likely avoids a major freak out. More: Radioactive products and other sources of radiation. Amateur radiation detection and experimentation.
