Julia Allison is a self-proclaimed “New Media Personality and Journalist.” And it’s only within the last few years that the first title even become possible — in part, thanks to her–but also because of the latest in mobilizing and Web 2.0 technology. You can follow the Internet star’s life through her columns in Time Out New York, through her constant “Twittering,” and through the blog she created on her Internet start-up, NonSociety. “I’m an early adopter,” she insists, of digital technologies that have helped to popularize new sites like Twitter and Bebo. Julia is now a recognized expert in using new media to create and perpetuate a personal brand online. We spoke to Julia yesterday about how digital technology has enabled, well, Julia Allison.

This interview is part of a series on BigThink, sponsored by Dell and Digital Nomads.

I need to learn from Julia Allison about how to build my own brand using the Internet, and to further my interests, what this whole site is about, digital technology. I actually got some inspiration from this interview.

Kudos to BigThink. Prior to watching these interviews, I had a very low opinion of Allison. She actually comes across as a entrepreneur in some of her thoughts. I can not bare to watch her usual content, but it goes to show the quality of the interviewers.

It will be worth keeping a look out on BT and Allison to see where they are in 5 years.

The notion of instant Internet fame is actually pretty interesting — just what does it say about our culture? Here’s Wired’s take on the whole business:

I know that people on blogs give her a hard time — but she really cast the mold that others will emulate — maybe some will have better ideas to promote…But if they can replicate her marketing/internet saavy, it might work.

I’m curious though, can what she does be a long-term career? Are advertisers keen to associate with Internet celebrity (i.e. self created) or will this take years to develop, if ever? The internet sure does provide a great deal of new opportunities for work, and I guess it’s up to those creating these opportunites to figure out the business model. I love the idea that I’d never have to go into an office again. I’m all for working hard, at the times I want, rather than on somebody else’s schedule
